I want to learn to kayak.  What class should I take first?
If a beginner wants to learn some safety and how to comfortable maneuver a kayak on still water then
the three-hour, ACA Quick Start Your Kayak class is an excellent choice.  However, if a person only
wants to know how to paddle, then try the three-hour Confidence on the Water Class.  Nevertheless,
if you have been paddling for a while and yet your kayak moves in directions that you do not want it to
go then check out our Rhythmic Rotation Refinement class and perfect your forward stroke.

Why do you offer so many kayak classes?

I would like my child to learn to kayak.  Are children under 18 allowed in the class?
Is there any discount?
Kayaking is a great sport of all ages and physical abilities.  For safety, we require that a parent or
guardian take the class along with the child.  We present all of our guests with the same quality of
instruction; therefore, children's registrations are the same price as an adult's class.  The parent /
guardian and child must register at the same time.

What happens if the weather is too bad to go out in?
For your safety, we will notify our guests the night before a class or trip if there is a known storm
predicted for the following day.  We will reschedule the class or trip for another day.  If the weather
suddenly becomes inclement on the day of a class or trip, a delay to allow the weather to improve
may occur; otherwise, we will reschedule the scheduled event due to a concern for your safety.

I live more than 50 miles from Clearwater, Fl.  Is there an additional charge to a
class for one of your instructors to come to my hometown to teach?
Yes, there is an additional charge for one of our instructors to drive to your hometown if it is more
than 50 miles outside of Clearwater, Fl.  The additional charge covers driving expenses.  An
additional charge for food and lodging may occur depending on the location of your hometown.
However, if one of our instructors is already in your hometown on a related business duty the
elimination of some or all of the additional expenses is possible.

I am afraid that a kayak will flip and I will be stuck in it.  Are there kayaks that are stable and
that I will not get stuck in if it does flip?
Many factors affect the stability of a kayak.  Although, if you want to avoid a closed in feeling and
have the comfort of knowing that your kayak is stable then I can recommend a style of kayak.  Try
paddling Sit on Top kayaks.  They are very stable and some styles do not sacrifice speed for
stability.  Check out the pictures of Sean, and I doing headstands, and Chrystal standing and
throwing a cast net on Sit on Top kayaks made by Ocean Kayaks.  Sean is on the Prowler Big
Game, I am on the Prowler 13, and a picture of Chrystal is coming soon.

I thought there was only one way to roll a kayak.  How many ways are there to
recover from a capsized kayak?
There are many ways to recover from an overturned kayak.  Some talented modern kayakers know
up to 16 types of Euro Recovery Rolls; where as, Traditional Greenland Qajaq paddlers know at
least 34 ways to roll from unplanned capsizes.  The varieties of rolls exist due to the type of kayak
and the water environment that the paddler enters into.  To learn more about recovering from a
capsized kayak check out these links.

How can I enjoy kayaking when it is not a nice day outside?
You can do many things when you cannot go outside.  Granted, reading and watching how to kayak
can lead to boredom.  Thankfully, Sean and Jeff have discovered ways to keep the spirit of kayaking
alive.  The following link takes you to their discoveries of independent films, fictional books, and
fitness tips, that all help a person enjoy kayaking even when there is no water to play in.  LINK

Do I need a lot of stuff to enjoy my time on the water during one of your guided

What is the ACA?
The American Canoe Association, founded in 1880, is the nation's largest and most active paddle
sports organization, dedicated to promoting canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.  Membership in the
association has increased significantly over the past six years, from 5,000 in 1993 to more than
50,000 in 2002.  For most of the last three decades, the association has been a nationally
recognized resource in the fields of paddle sport instruction and education.  Currently there are more
than 4500 ACA certified canoe and kayak instructors in the U.S. and approximately 240 ACA
instructor trainers.  Collectively, these instructors teach ACA approved programs to an estimated
100,000+ students each year, primarily through summer camp programs, affiliated groups (e.g.
scouts, YMCA, et cetera), liveries / outfitters, and professional paddle sport schools.

What is the BCU?
The British Canoe Union was set up in 1936 to send a team to the Berlin Olympics.  The BCU is now
the lead body for canoeing and kayaking in the United Kingdom.  The organization has grown
considerably, and the range of canoeing opportunity has increased tremendously.  Today the BCU
has an individual membership of over 25,000, 469 affiliated clubs, and 145 approved centers.  In
2000, the BCU federalized to become the umbrella organization for the Home Nation Associations
in Scotland (SCA), Wales (WCA), and Northern Ireland (CANI).  In England, Canoe England was set
up, on a par with the other National Associations, as a division of the BCU, to support the
development of canoeing in England.  The BCU is responsible for leading and setting the overall
framework for the National Associations representing canoeing interests such as coaching and
competition at UK and international level.  The BCU now has a presence in the United States through
    BCU North America.
